Cleaning Your Vinyl Records

By DoddySopyan on August 30, 2011 in Home Audio & Video

Today vinyl records are gaining in popularity, with many collectors and music fans enjoying the sound quality each time they play a record. If you love collecting records, you really need to understand how to take care of and also clean them the right way. This will ensure that the records will last longer.

The first thing you will need to keep in mind would be to store your records properly. Records need to be kept in their sleeves as a way toavoid becoming dirty. Be careful not to ever leave records out unprotected, as this is a way they might get damaged and dirty. Getting dirt on vinyl records plays a big part in scratches and causing damage. Records must be stored vertically so they are not under pressure. Also remember to keep your records in a cool environment to reduce the chances of heat damage.

Records should be cleaned after each use for you to help them last longer. When it’s time to clean your records, follow these simple steps:

1. Be sure to hold your record properly so as to prevent dropping it. Make use of a carbon fiber brush specially designed for cleaning records and brush the surface of your record lightly. This should remove small particles from your record. As long as you are careful with your records and store them properly, this should generally keep them in good shape.

2. Now and then you may find that you need to take your record cleaning to the next level. It is also a good option to carefully clean your collection a minimum of once each year to help keep them in top shape. This generally a good idea any time you come across any dirt or dust on your records that the brush alone will not take care of. You can either pick up a cleaning solution specifically designed for record cleaning or simply use distilled water to be able to do a much more thorough cleaning job. Using a paper towel or soft cloth, gently wipe the record with either the record cleaning solution or distilled water. You will be able to remove grease and dirt, and be able to enjoy your record collection any time you please.

Tending to your vinyl records is important to extend the life your valued collection.
